Used Car Buying Checklist

Documents & seller

• Confirm who is selling the car. Check their identity, contact details and authority to sell. For a private sale, ask to meet at the address on the paperwork.
• See the original V5C log book. Match the registration, make, model and VIN to the car. A V5C identifies the registered keeper; it is not proof of ownership.
• Read the history before committing. Review MOT records, service invoices and recorded mileage. Ask for evidence explaining gaps or inconsistencies.
• Resolve any report alerts. Ask for evidence about finance, stolen, write-off or other recorded markers. Resolve outstanding questions before paying.

Inspect the car

• View it in daylight. Look for uneven panel gaps, mismatched paint, corrosion and signs of leaks. Check the tyres, wheels, glass and lights.
• Try the equipment. Test the locks, windows, air conditioning and displays. Check that the supplied keys work.
• Check service and repair evidence. Compare the records with the car’s maintenance schedule. Ask what work is due next and what it may cost.
• Check recalls and get help if needed. Ask whether recall work is complete. Consider an independent inspection, especially if damage or repairs need explaining.

Take a test drive

• Confirm you are covered to drive. Agree the test drive with the seller and check that your licence and insurance cover it.
• Start from cold where possible. Listen for unusual noises, look for smoke and check whether warning lights remain on after starting.
• Check how it drives. On a safe route, assess steering, brakes, gear changes and suspension. Listen for rattles and feel for vibration.
• Pause before deciding. Review anything you noticed with the seller. Get an expert opinion if you are unsure rather than feeling pressured to buy.

Payment & handover

• Agree the purchase in writing. Record the registration, VIN, mileage, price, date, seller’s details and any agreed repairs. Keep the advert and a signed receipt.
• Verify payment details. Confirm the recipient with the seller and use a traceable payment method. Keep confirmation of payment and any deposit terms.
• Collect the documents and keys. Arrange the keeper change, obtain the new keeper slip and collect service records, manuals, spare keys and any warranty documents.
• Prepare before driving away. Arrange insurance, tax the vehicle and check the MOT requirements. Do not rely on the seller’s existing vehicle tax.
